RESUMO

Illustrating the biodegradation processes of multi-component volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will expedite the implication of biotechnology in purifying industrial exhaust. Here, performance shifts of microbial fuel cell and biotrickling filter combined system (MFC-BTF) are investigated for removing single and dual components of toluene and benzene. Synchronous removal of toluene (95 %) and benzene (97 %) are achieved by MFC-BTF accompanied with the output current of 0.41 mA. Elevated content of extracellular polymeric substance facilitates the mass transfer of benzene with the presence of toluene. Strains of Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi contribute to the removal of dual components VOCs. Empty bed reaction time and the VOCs concentration are the important factors influencing their dissolution in the system. The biodegradation of toluene and benzene proceeds with 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde and o-hydroxybenzoic acid as the main intermediates. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of multi-component VOCs removal by MFC-BTF and guide the system design, optimization, and scale-up.

Introduction: In Nigeria, because of increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, and auto-mobilization, petrol is the most everyday non-edible commodity, and it is the leading petroleum product traded at the proliferating Nigeria's petrol stations (NPSs). However, because of inadequate occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory measures, working at NPSs exposes petrol station workers (PSWs) to a large amount of hazardous benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds. Methods: Studies on BTEX exposures among Nigerian PSWs are scarce. Thus, constraints in quantifying the health risks of BTEX limit stakeholders' ability to design practical risk assessment and risk control strategies. This paper reviews studies on the OHS of Nigerian PSWs at the NPSs. Results: Although knowledge, attitude, and practices on OHS in NPSs vary from one Nigeria's study setting to another, generally, safety practices, awareness about hazards and personal protective equipment (PPE), and the use of PPE among PSWs fell below expectations. Additionally, air quality at NPSs was poor, with a high content of BTEX and levels of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, and formaldehyde higher than the World Health Organization guideline limits. Discussion: Currently, regulatory bodies' effectiveness and accountability in safeguarding OHS at NPSs leave much to be desired. Understanding the OHS of NPSs would inform future initiatives, policies, and regulations that would promote the health and safety of workers at NPSs. However, further studies need to be conducted to describe the vulnerability of PSWs and other Nigerians who are occupationally exposed to BTEX pollution. More importantly, controlling air pollution from hazardous air pollutants like BTEX is an essential component of OHS and integral to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3, 7, and 11.

African American women in the United States have a high risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. DNA methylation is a potential mechanism by which exposure to BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) may cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. Data are from the Maternal Stress Study, which recruited African American women in the second trimester of pregnancy from February 2009 to June 2010. DNA methylation was measured in archived DNA from venous blood collected in the second trimester. Trimester-specific exposure to airshed BTEX was estimated using maternal self-reported addresses and geospatial models of ambient air pollution developed as part of the Geospatial Determinants of Health Outcomes Consortium. Among the 64 women with exposure and outcome data available, 46 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were associated with BTEX exposure (FDR adjusted p-value < 0.05) using a DMR-based epigenome-wide association study approach. Overall, 89% of DMRs consistently exhibited hypomethylation with increasing BTEX exposure. Biological pathway analysis identified 11 enriched pathways, with the top 3 involving gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor signaling, oxytocin in brain signaling, and the gustation pathway. These findings highlight the potential impact of BTEX on DNA methylation in pregnant women.

There is a lack of knowledge on the biodegradation mechanisms of benzene and benzo [a]pyrene (BaP), representative compounds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), under individually and mixed contaminated soils. Therefore, a set of microcosm experiments were conducted to explore the influence of benzene and BaP on biodegradation under individual and mixed contaminated condition, and their subsequent influence on native microbial consortium. The results revealed that the total mass loss of benzene was 56.0% under benzene and BaP mixed contamination, which was less than that of individual benzene contamination (78.3%). On the other hand, the mass loss of BaP was slightly boosted to 17.6% under the condition of benzene mixed contamination with BaP from that of individual BaP contamination (14.4%). The significant differences between the microbial and biocide treatments for both benzene and BaP removal demonstrated that microbial degradation played a crucial role in the mass loss for both contaminants. In addition, the microbial analyses revealed that the contamination of benzene played a major role in the fluctuations of microbial compositions under co-contaminated conditions. Rhodococcus, Nocardioides, Gailla, and norank_c_Gitt-GS-136 performed a major role in benzene biodegradation under individual and mixed contaminated conditions while Rhodococcus, Noviherbaspirillum, and Phenylobacterium were highly involved in BaP biodegradation. Moreover, binary benzene and BaP contamination highly reduced the Rhodococcus abundance, indicating the toxic influence of co-contamination on the functional key genus. Enzymatic activities revealed that catalase, lipase, and dehydrogenase activities proliferated while polyphenol oxidase was reduced with contamination compared to the control treatment. These results provided the fundamental information to facilitate the development of more efficient bioremediation strategies, which can be tailored to specific remediation of different contamination scenarios.

Heavy-atom-free photosensitizers are potentially suitable for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this contribution, a new family of unsymmetrical benzothieno-fused BODIPYs with reactive oxygen efficiency up to 50% in air-saturated toluene was reported. Their efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) resulted in the generation of both 1O2 and O2-• under irradiation. More importantly, the PDT efficacy of a respective 4-methoxystyryl-modified benzothieno-fused BODIPY in living cells exhibited an extremely high phototoxicity with an ultralow IC50 value of 2.78 nM. The results revealed that the incorporation of an electron-donating group at the α-position of the unsymmetrical benzothieno-fused BODIPY platform might be an effective approach for developing long-wavelength absorbing heavy-atom-free photosensitizers for precision cancer therapy.

This paper reports a method for determining the oil absorption value of inorganic powder based on tracer-assisted headspace gas chromatographic (HS-GC) technique. The method was carried out by adding 25 µL droplet of toluene-Dioctyl Phthalate solution onto the surface of 1.0 g inorganic powder, then sealing the headspace vial and shaking it to make the powder spherical. The amount of toluene that not been adsorbed by inorganic powder was quantified using HS-GC with the optimal equilibrium temperature and time conditions of 100 °C and 7 min, respectively. A new mathematical model shows that the oil absorption value can be determined from the signal of toluene. The results show that the employed method has good precision (the relative standard deviation < 3.6 %) and accuracy (R2 = 0.993). This method is simple and accurate, and can be an reliable tool for testing the oil absorption value of inorganic powder sample.

Treacher Collins syndrome-3 (TCS-3) is a rare congenital craniofacial disorder attributed to variants in the RNA pol I subunit C (POLR1C). The pathogenesis of TCS-3 linked to polr1c involves the activation of apoptosis-dependent p53 pathways within neural crest cells (NCCs). This occurs due to disruptions in ribosome biogenesis, and the restoration of polr1c expression in early embryogenesis effectively rescues the observed craniofacial phenotype in polr1c-deficient zebrafish. Clinical variability in TCS patients suggests interactions between genes and factors like oxidative stress. Elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in epithelial cells may worsen phenotypic outcomes in TCS individuals. Our study confirmed excessive ROS production in facial regions, inducing apoptosis and altering p53 pathways. Deregulated cell-cycle and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) genes were also detected in the TCS-3 model. Utilizing p53 inhibitor (Pifithrin-α; PFT-α) or antioxidants (Glutathione; GSH and N-Acetyl-L-cysteine; NAC) effectively corrected migrated NCC distribution in the pharyngeal arch (PA), suppressed oxidative stress, prevented cell death, and modulated EMT inducers. Crucially, inhibiting p53 activation or applying antioxidants within a specific time window, notably within 30 h post-fertilization (hpf), successfully reversed phenotypic effects induced by polr1c MO.

Epidemiological evidence concerning effects of simultaneous exposure to noise and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS) on renal function remains uncertain. In 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 1160 petrochemical workers in southern China to investigate effects of their co-exposure on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and mild renal impairment (MRI). Noise levels were assessed using cumulative noise exposure (CNE). Urinary biomarkers for BTEXS were quantified. We found the majority of workers had exposure levels to noise and BTEXS below China's occupational exposure limits. CNE, trans, trans-muconic acid (tt-MA), and the sum of mandelic acid and phenylglyoxylic acid (PGMA) were linearly associated with decreased eGFR and increased MRI risk. We observed U-shaped associations for both N-acetyl-S-phenyl-L-cysteine (SPMA) and o-methylhippuric acid (2-MHA) with MRI. In further assessing the joint effect of BTEXS (ß, -0.164 [95% CI, -0.296 to -0.033]) per quartile increase in all BTEXS metabolites on eGFR using quantile g-computation models, we found SPMA, tt-MA, 2-MHA, and PGMA played pivotal roles. Additionally, the risk of MRI associated with tt-MA was more pronounced in workers with lower CNE levels (P = 0.004). Multiplicative interaction analysis revealed antagonisms of CNE and PGMA on MRI risk (P = 0.034). Thus, our findings reveal negative dose-effect associations between noise and BTEXS mixture exposure and renal function in petrochemical workers. With the exception of toluene, benzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, and styrene are all concerning pollutants for renal dysfunction. Effects of benzene, ethylbenzene, and styrene exposure on renal dysfunction were more pronounced in workers with lower CNE.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive research on the effects of individual benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and their mixture measured in blood samples, on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and related risk factors among the general population is limited. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of blood individual and mixed BTEX on total CVD and its subtypes, lipid profiles, and white blood cell (WBC) count. METHODS: Survey-weighted multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the associations between blood individual and mixed BTEX with CVD and its subtypes in 17,007 participants from NHANES 1999-2018. The combined effect of BTEX mixture on CVD was estimated using weighted quantile sum modeling and quantile g-computation. Weighted multivariate linear regression assessed the effects of BTEX on lipid profiles and WBC, including its five-part differential count. RESULTS: In comparison to the reference quartile of BTEX mixture, individuals in the highest quartile had a significantly increased adjusted odds ratio of CVD risk (1.64, 95 % CI: 1.23 to 2.19, P for trend = 0.008). Positive associations were observed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and m-/p-xylene, demonstrating a monotonically increasing exposure-response relationship. Mixed BTEX was associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), angina pectoris, and heart attack. Individual benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene were associated with CHF, while toluene, ethylbenzene, and all xylene isomers were linked to angina pectoris. Benzene, toluene, and o-xylene were associated with heart attack. Both mixed and individual BTEX showed positive associations with triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and WBC, including its five-part differential count, but a negative relationship with high-density lipoprotein. Subgroup analyses identified modifying effects of smoking, drinking, exercise, BMI, hypertension, and diabetes on the associations between specific toxicants and CVD risk. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to BTEX was associated with cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk factors. These findings emphasize the importance of considering blood BTEX levels when assessing cardiovascular health risks.

A thermal desorber (TD) can be used in different ways to introduce samples in a gas chromatographic (GC) system. Besides its conventional use where the collected analytes are released from the sorbent in the sample tube, direct dynamic desorption (DDD) is an interesting option where a solid sample is put directly in the TD tube. However, since no sorbent is used for the sample, proper calibration is not straightforward. This issue was investigated in the present work using offline liquid calibration (OLC) and inline liquid calibration (ILC). Unexpectedly, ILC yielded a lower response than OLC. This could be related to the adsorption kinetics of the analytes and water on the cold trap of the TD. More insight was gained performing double injection ILC experiments with toluene as diluent for the analytes and injecting water before or after the toluene solution. This revealed a clear influence of the diluent. The influence of water was further explored applying two cold trap temperatures (4 °C and -30 °C). Inserting a LiCl trap in the TD tube to capture the water was found to be an effective solution for the problem. Finally, quantitative aspects of this approach were demonstrated.

This study aimed to examine the impacts of single and multiple air pollutants (AP) on the severity of breast cancer (BC). Data of 1148 diagnosed BC cases (2008-2016) were obtained from the Cancer Research Center and private oncologist offices in Tehran, Iran. Ambient PM10, SO2, NO, NO2, NOX, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, p-xylene, o-xylene, and BTEX data were obtained from previously developed land use regression models. Associations between pollutants and stage of BC were assessed by multinomial logistic regression models. An increase of 10 µg/m3 in ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and 10 ppb of NO corresponded to 10.41 (95% CI 1.32-82.41), 4.07 (1.46-11.33), 2.89 (1.08-7.73) and 1.08 (1.00-1.15) increase in the odds of stage I versus non-invasive BC, respectively. Benzene (OR, odds ratio = 1.16, 95% CI 1.01-1.33) and o-xylene (OR = 1.18, 1.02-1.38) were associated with increased odds of incidence of BC stages III & IV versus non-invasive stages. BC stage I and stage III&IV in women living in low SES areas was associated with significantly higher levels of benzene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, and m-xylene. The highest multiple-air-pollutants quartile was associated with a higher odds of stage I BC (OR = 3.16) in patients under 50 years old. This study provides evidence that exposure to AP is associated with increased BC stage at diagnosis, especially under premenopause age.

Within the syngas production from biomass gasification, tar removal constitutes a chief issue to overcome for advanced catalytic systems. This work investigates the performance of Ni and Ni-K catalysts for reforming of derived-biomass producer gas using toluene as model tar. At 750 °C and 60Lg-1h-1, the stability test (70 h) revealed stable performances (CO2, CH4 and C7H8 conversions of 60, 95 and 100%, correspondingly) uniquely for the Ni-K catalyst. Although the efficient protection towards coking let by K was demonstrated, TPO studies over the post-reacted systems still evidenced the presence of carbon deposits for both samples. Conducting three successive reaction/regeneration cycles with different gasifying agents (air, steam and CO2) at 800 °C for 1h, the capability towards regeneration of both catalytic systems was assessed and the spent catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. While none of the regeneration treatments recovered the performance of the unpromoted catalyst, the Ni-K catalysts demonstrated the capability of being fully regenerated by air and CO2 and exhibited analogous catalytic performances after a series of reaction/regeneration cycles. Hence, it is proved that the addition of K into Ni catalysts not only enhances the resistance against deactivation but enables rather facile regenerative procedures under certain atmospheres (air and CO2).

The aim of the present study was to develop a semi-quantitative urine pregnancy test for mares based on the Cuboni reaction and to verify the reliability of this test. The urine specimens were hydrolyzed by heating in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The resulting free estrogens were extracted from the urine matrix using toluene. Sulfuric acid was added to the toluene extract and the mixture was heated again. The lower layer in the test tube containing sulfuric acid was used for fluorescence measurements with excitation at 355 nm and measurement at 535 nm. The fluorometric Cuboni test revealed that the fluorescence counts in urine samples collected after the second trimester of gestation were significantly higher than those obtained from barren mares. The levels of estrogens, including equilin, estrone and estardiol-17ß exhibited a dose-dependent increase in fluorescence counts, whereas other steroids, such as progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol, did not affect fluorescence. Heat treatment of urine samples with hydrochloric acid significantly increased the fluorescence counts in those collected after the second trimester of gestation compared to non-pregnant samples, implying the presence of large amounts of conjugated estrogens in pregnant mare urine. Fluorescence counts in urine samples obtained during pregnancy showed a positive relationship with estrone concentrations as measured by enzyme immunoassay. The results of the present study showed that the fluorometric Cuboni test facilitates urine fluorescence counts depending on the urinary estrogen content and is capable of discriminating between pregnancy and non-pregnancy states beyond the second trimester of gestation in mares.

The safety of underground drinking water has received widespread attention. However, few studies have focused on the occurrence and health risks of pollutants in underground drinking water of coking contaminated sites. In this study, the distribution characteristics, sources, and human health risks of benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in underground drinking water from a typical coking contaminated site in Shanxi of China were investigated. The average concentrations of BTX and PAHs in coking plant (CP) were 5.1 and 4.8 times higher than those in residential area (RA), respectively. Toluene and Benzene were the main BTX, while Acenaphthene, Fluorene, and Pyrene were the main PAHs. Concentrations of BTX/PAHs were negatively correlated with altitude, revealing altitude might be an important geological factor influencing spatial distribution of BTX/PAHs. PMF model demonstrated that the BTX/PAHs pollution in RA mainly originated from coking industrial activities. Health risk assessments were conducted by a modified US EPA-based model, in which environmental concentrations were replaced by residual concentrations after boiling. Residual ratios of different BTX/PAHs were determined by boiling experiments to be 9.4-93.8 %. The average total carcinogenic risks after boiling were decreased from 2.6 × 10-6 to 1.4 × 10-6 for adults, and from 4.3 × 10-6 to 2.1 × 10-6 for children, suggesting boiling was an effective strategy to reduce the carcinogenic risks from BTX/PAHs, especially for ingestion pathway. Monte Carlo simulation results matched well with the calculated results, suggesting the uncertainty was acceptable and the risk assessment results were reliable. This study provided useful information for revealing the spatial distribution of BTX/PAHs in underground drinking water of coking contaminated sites, understanding their linkage with altitude, and also helped to more accurately evaluate the health risks by using the newly established boiling-modified models.

Flexible polyurethane foams (PUF) are used in many consumer products. PUF may contain trace levels of aromatic diamine impurities that could represent a potential health risk. The risk associated with sleeping on a PUF mattress was evaluated. Toxicity benchmarks for sensitization and non-cancer endpoints were derived from the respective points-of-departure using standard assessment factors. For the cancer endpoints, toxicity benchmarks were derived from the 25th-percentile values of animal studies. Recently published emission and migration data allowed to link exposure with the CertiPURTM voluntary quality limits of ≤5 mg.kg-1 for 2,4-toluene diamine and 4,4'-methylene dianiline in PUF. Using conservative exposure scenarios, lifetime-average daily internal doses from the combined inhalation and dermal exposures were calculated. Margins of safety for non-cancer and sensitization endpoints were >104. The theoretical excess cancer risk was ≤1.5 × 10-7. It is concluded that sleeping on a mattress that satisfies the CertiPUR limit value does not pose undue risk to consumers.

This study presents the catalytic pyrolysis of microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), using pure CH4 and H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition on three different HZSM-5 catalysts loaded with Zn, Ga, and Pt, aimed specifically at producing high-value mono-aromatics such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX). In comparison with that for the typical inert N2 environment, a pure CH4 environment increased the bio-oil yield from 32.4 wt% to 37.4 wt% probably due to hydrogen and methyl radical insertion in the bio-oil components. Furthermore, the addition of bimetals further increased bio-oil yield. For example, ZnPtHZ led to a bio-oil yield of 47.7 wt% in pure CH4. ZnGaHZ resulted in the maximum BTEX yield (6.68 wt%), which could be explained by CH4 activation, co-aromatization, and hydrodeoxygenation. The BTEX yield could be further increased to 7.62 wt% when pyrolysis was conducted in H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition over ZnGaHZ, as rates of aromatization and hydrodeoxygenation were relatively high under this condition. This study experimentally validated that the combination of ZnGaHZ and CH4 decomposition synergistically increases BTEX production using C. vulgaris.

Objectives. The present study aimed to assess whether occupational exposure to low concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) is associated with color vision impairment. Methods. We queried PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and ProQuest as the main databases, as well as gray literature such as Google Scholar. A random-effects model was used to assess relative risk. A funnel plot was created to assess publication bias. Meta-regression analysis was applied to identify variables that explain the between-study variation in the reported risk estimate. Results. An overall standardized mean difference of 0.529 (95% confidence interval [0.269, 0.788]; p < 0.0001) was obtained in the random-effects model, which corresponded to a medium-size effect. Duration and the levels of exposure to benzene, toluene and xylene were the significant predictors of the magnitude of the combined risk estimate. Chronic exposure to low levels of BTEX was associated with dyschromatopsia determined by the color confusion index. Conclusions. The impairments can occur even at exposures lower than the occupational exposure limits of BTEX. However, there are several flaws in the determination of workers' exposure, which did not allow to establish how low a level of these chemicals can cause color vision impairment.

To treat a life-threatening disease like cancer, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) methods were combined into sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT) as an effective therapeutic solution. Each day, the usage of phthalocyanine sensitizers increases in the therapeutic applications as they have the ability to produce more reactive oxygen species. In this context, a new diaxially silicon phthalocyanine sensitizer, containing triazole and tert-butyl groups, was synthesized. After elucidating the structure of the complex with elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis, MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR, its photophysical, photochemical and sono-photochemical properties were examined. When singlet oxygen generation capacity of the new synthesized silicon phthalocyanine complex was determined and compared among photochemical (PDT; Ð¤Δ = 0.59 in DMSO, 0.44 in THF, 0.47 in toluene) and sonophotochemical (SPDT; Ð¤Δ = 0.88 in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 0.60 in tetrahydrofuran (THF), 0.65 in toluene) methods, it can be said that the complex is a successful sono-photosensitizer that can be used as a good SPDT agent in vitro or in vivo future studies.

We present a rare case of a patient with toluene exposure manifesting as anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease on a background of phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R)-associated membranous nephropathy. A 23-year-old man presented to the emergency department with hypertension, headache, hemoptysis, anemia, acute kidney injury, glomerular hematuria, and proteinuria. He endorsed repeated exposure to toluene-containing products while repairing dirt bikes. Serologies were positive for anti-GBM antibodies. Kidney biopsy showed crescentic glomerulonephritis with linear immunoglobulin G and granular PLA2R staining by immunofluorescence. He was initially treated with high-dose steroids, plasmapheresis, and hemodialysis for pulmonary-renal syndrome followed by oral cyclophosphamide and prednisone, which were discontinued after 3 months when follow-up biopsies confirmed little chance for renal recovery. He remained on dialysis 1 year later. This case exhibits a unique presentation of anti-GBM syndrome and underlying membranous nephropathy following repeated hydrocarbon exposure. Inhaled toxins promote recurrent localized inflammation, unmasking previously hidden epitopes. Early diagnosis and appropriate use of immunosuppressive and extracorporeal therapies are necessary to prevent morbidity and to improve survival in this rare condition.
